Update 8 from Mexico

Update 8

8/3/09

Today began our biggest outreach week of the summer we have over 100 campers on the ranch.  We have a mixture this week that is also interesting.  We have a Chinese team, a Mexican team, and also a couple American teams.  We will also be adding an additional team on Wednesday.  The girls soccer team from Masters College.  They will be doing a building project while they are here.

8/4/09

Today I found out that I will be heading up the building project for the Masters College team that will be here tomorrow.  We will be building a meeting space for a Bible study that meets on Thursdays.  This means that I will get up and make breakfast, and have lunch semi prepped, and then Kristy will finish lunches while I go out to the site and get work going.  All this while hobbling around with a hernia – not fun.  Currently the Bible study has been meeting at the childrens home, but are out of space.  We will be building a church type space using garage doors.  Used garage doors are cheap here (about $40 for a heavy woden 12-16’ door) and readily available.  Unfortunately there is not money available to build a more permanent structure for them.  So today I need to draw up some kind of plan for assembling garage doors into walls.  Gotta run, got lots to get ready.

Began work today on the Garage door church.  The doors were not there when we got there in the morning, so we began with leveling the path making it more easily walked on to get back to the building.  By lunch time the doors got there, and I did a quick measure on the lengths, and headed out to lunch.  Big surprise, out of 6 doors, only 2 of them were the same length.  Challenge for lunch was to draw up a blue print using wall panels that were all different sizes.  It is going to be interesting.  After lunch, we were able to get 4 of the 6 panels put in place and secured over night.

Got the other 2 wall sections up, and they were also able to get supports up on the roof for the tarp that we will eventually put over it so that it can be used as it gets cooler, and as they head into the rainy season.  We still have 2 doors to put in, and also 2 windows that I found laying around that I will be putting in to allow a little more ventilation when they get the tarp on the roof.

OK, teams have left, now I need to turn my attention to my health and do something about my hernia.  I went to the Red Cross hospital here in Rosarito today, and was checked out and yes, I do have a hernia.  The doctor recommended that I see the specialist on Monday.  Will do.

8/9/09

3 bilingual worship services this morning, and a restful afternoon.

Saw the specialist this morning, and went back for blood work this afternoon.  Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.  Oh yeah, I also went over to the building that we did last week and helped put in the doors and windows.  Luckily I have a wife that likes to build things, so she was a great help, and is keeping me from doing too much that I shouldn’t.

Surgery day – so, when was the last time that you went in for surgery, and they had to turn on the lights for the hospital so you could see?  Kinda a strange feeling, but I have confidance in the doctor, and I am sure that everything will be fine.  Kristy is staying overnight with me for the first night, and so they gave us a room with 3 beds in it so she would have somewhere to sleep also.  It works out nice when you are the only person in the whole hospital and you can have your choice of rooms.

Surgery is over, and all appears to have gone well, I have an awesome nurse with me at home (my wife).  It is going to be a long 2-3 weeks while I recuperate and cannot lift anything for at least that long.  That will be tough with trying to finish things, and pack up here.  My family will have to do more of what would be my normal work.

7/13/09

After cooking 2 meals for the team, we headed state side to pick up groceries for the week.  Did not get back to the ranch till about 9:30 pm.  Another long day, but on the bright side, we made it to the states, found all the stores that we needed to, and back “home” without getting lost.  We did get pulled into secondary inspection at the border.  With over $1000 worth of stuff with us I was a bit concerned that we were going to end up paying “taxes” on it.  They opened the back door of the van looked in, closed us up and sent us on our way.  God is definitely looking out for us and the ministry here.
